CONFESSION INTERVIEW DICTATION

โ€œWhat made you decide to do it?โ€

โ€œDo what?โ€

โ€œKill Garfield.โ€

โ€œWhy would I kill Garfield?โ€

โ€œYou tell me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been happily serving him since 1978.โ€

โ€œSo you do consider it serving.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œYou consider yourself beneath him.โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€

โ€œSo you find that demeaning, do you?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s my place.โ€

โ€œTo serve?โ€

โ€œTo sit.ย  On the floor.ย  With the water.โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™re blaming the water.โ€

โ€œThe water didnโ€™t have anything to do with this.โ€

โ€œThen you admit it.โ€

โ€œAdmit what?โ€

โ€œYou poisoned Garfield.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s crazy.โ€

โ€œIs it?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about.โ€

โ€œYou knew heโ€™d eat the lasagna. Thatโ€™s why you presented it to him last Tuesday evening.ย  So you could kill him before Wednesday.โ€

โ€œWednesday?โ€

โ€œYes.ย  Wednesday.โ€

โ€œWhat happened Wednesday?โ€

โ€œWednesday was your ticket out.ย  You knew youโ€™d never be able to leave the Arbuckle house if Garfield was still around.โ€

โ€œI could leave whenever I wanted.”

โ€œHeโ€™d be all over you. Guarding you the entire day. ย You think heโ€™d let you out of his sight even for one minute?โ€

โ€œIf the timing was right.โ€

โ€œWhen would be the right time to leave?

โ€œI never thought about it.โ€

โ€œBut if you didโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œHow about Wednesday?โ€

โ€œWhy would I want to leave Wednesday?โ€

โ€œWednesday was different.โ€

โ€œBecause of the lasagna?โ€

โ€œBecause of your possible new future in a better home with a better cat in a better section of the kitchen.โ€

โ€œStop.โ€

โ€œYou know Iโ€™m right. Just say it.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œSay what happened on Wednesday.โ€

โ€œI wanted to leave Garfield.โ€

โ€œBut why Wednesday?

โ€œBecause Wednesdayโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWednesday was the day that Normal was coming.โ€

โ€œAnd you wanted a Normal life, didnโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œA life without neediness.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œA life without possession.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œA life without Garfield.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

  1. Great pacing, funny, nice tension. I read this whole story, appreciating it and loving the rhythm, somehow without making the connection that today I am slogging through critiques of a draft short story of my own that’s an interview between a prisoner and an interrogator that only contains dialogue. So apparently I am your exact target audience for this story. ๐Ÿ™‚

Haha this is excellent, the pacing is great and I like that it’s told entirely through dialogue. You’ve turned everyone’s favorite, wholesome comic on its head, thanks for sharing!

  15. I’ve read a lot of blogs and I’ve to say this is the first time I can say that someone had really taken the creative of creative-writing quite seriously. I’m unbelievably impressed. I would have never thought of writing as a cat dish or a bracelet. Just brilliant.
